VISUALIZATION OF LAMINAR NATURAL CONVECTION IN ROMB-SHAPED ENCLOSURES BY MEANS OF LIQUID CRYSTALS

Abstract

Laminar natural convection in glycerol in romb-shaped enclosures (romb angles 59°, 44° and 28.3°), with two opposite vertical walls kept at different temperatures, was investigated experimentally and numerically. The Rayleigh (Ra) and Prandtl (Pr) numbers ranged from 2,000 to 251,000 and 5,800 to 2,680, respectively. The experimental work was focused on flow visualization by means of small particles of plexiglas and unencapsulated liquid crystals as tracers. In the latter case the temperature fields were also visualized.
