Abstract

This paper presents experimental methods for studying heat and fluid flow in rotating systems, which consist of flow measurement and visualization techniques. Flow measurements include the meters, probe systems, laser Doppler velocimetry, particle image velocimetry, and thermal imaging and measurement techniques. Flow visualization methods include the surface flow method (such as wall tracers and tufts), tracer method (such as particles, smoke-wire, hydrogen bubble, and spark-tracer), optical method (such as light sheet, and derotator), and computer-assisted method (such as image processing). A survey is conducted on these experimental methods and applications are demonstrated in rotating drums with inner surface heating.
