HYDROGEN AS A PILOT AND MAIN FUEL IN GAS TURBINES FOR STATIONARY AND TRANSPORT INCLUDING AERO APPLICATIONS.

Abstract

A radial swirler burner design which incorporated a hydrogen pilot with lean staging is compared with dual stage natural gas pilot design in gas turbine (GT) conditions. All of the combustion air was admitted into the combustor with the effect that mixing took place in the axial burner primarily for low NOx production in lean conditions. The fuel was passage injected in the jets inside the counter rotating design made in Leeds for Rolls Royce which also incorporates a pilot central injector. A wall injector just downstream of the radial swirler exit was also used to provide an alternative pilot source. The thrust of the investigation is on a dual fuel consisting of natural gas (NG) as the main fuel and hydrogen (H2) as the pilot in a similar design to that used by aero industries in low NOx aero gas turbines (GTs) The NOx disadvantage of the H2 caused by higher combustion temperature is examined within the lean burn ability of the fuel to reduce emissions. The possibility to increase the turndown ratio and lower the weak extinction through injector position, fuel staging and air staging geometry is assessed and in order to improve and optimise the burner design for dual fuel and utilise the higher turbulence characteristic contribution for better mixing, premixing and preheating by H2 is investigated.
