Implementing an information system for an automated shop floor control is a difficult, time consuming, and expensive task. A methodology for creating an object-based representation of the manufacturing system, and a sample application are introduced. This representation can serve as a basis for a subsequent software development phase. The main benefits of the suggested representation are: common concepts which are usable through all development stages, easy manipulation of entities, modularity and easier implementation of real time control schemes.
