Abstract

Machinability data, which includes the selection of the appropriate cutting tools and the machining parameters of speed, feed and depth of cut, plays an important role in the efficient utilisation of machine tools and thus significantly influences the overall manufacturing costs.

This paper outlines a model for the application of fuzzy logic to metal cutting data selection. The model is based on the relationship which exists for any specific material between its hardness (input) and the corresponding recommended cutting speed and feed rate (output). The objective of the model is to facilitate the computerisation of the vast information available in machining data handbooks.
