Abstract

To further investigate the piston effect under 1g and microgravity we have developed a new test cell with a variable volume for a density range of ±35% around the critical density of SF6 (Tc = 318.717 K, Pc = 3.7545 MPa, ρc = 742 kg/m3, Wyczalkowska and Sengers) to enable a systematic determination of the isentropic dynamic temperature propagation. This cell is inserted in a precise thermostat used in the French ALICE II facility. Results of various forced piston effect experiments at different densities and temperatures are presented. A temperature undershoot is observed and an explanation given.
