Abstract
A review is made of research done on the topic of active control of the kind of thermocapillary convection that can occur via a bifurcation when the undisturbed temperature gradient is normal to a free surface. Predetermined control via modulation of the wall temperature or via the introduction of oscillatory shear is discussed first. The use of interactive, closed loop control is then discussed.
