Abstract

The sum of cathode-fall and anode-fall voltages, i.e. electrode fall voltages were measured for argon, air and SF6 arcs at a pressure of 0.1 MPa in wide current range from 10 to 20000A. Tungsten, carbon, iron, titanium, copper and copper-tungsten were used as electrode materials. For instance, the argon arc proved to have the electrode fall voltages of 14.1, 15.0, 16.7, 16.5, 16.5 and 16.5V at the W, C, Fe, Ti, Cu and Cu-W electrodes respectively. Furthermore, the electrode fall voltage of each arc at a given electrode was found to be independent of current in the above range.
