Abstract
The interaction of intense (1015 < I < 1017 W/cm2) subpicosecond (0. 1 < t < O.5 ps) normally incident laser pulses with solid targets is investigated. Target material heating, redistribution of the absorbed energy in the target,
plasma creation and shock wave generation are investigated.
