Distributions and Collisions of Sprays in an Airblast Planar Injector


The interaction between droplets in an airblast planar injector is described in this paper. The openings of the injector is 0.15 mm and 1 mm for water and air, respectively. The water flow rate is 13 g/s at a pressure 5 kg/cm2. The atomization air is controlled with the air-to-liquid mass ratio of 1.47. The measurements are carried out by a two component phase Doppler particle analyzer. The liquid-to-air volume ratio in the spray jet is less than l.23×10-4. Analysis on the raw data measured at the outer region of the spray jet shows two droplet clusters concentrated in the small and big droplet size ranges. Both the U-D and V-D correlations show a velocity peak between the two droplet clusters. Inspection on the raw data shows that the peak velocity appears in the U-D and V-D plots is due to the collision processes taking place in the spray jet. The new droplets come from such collision processes result in the redistribution of the droplet sizes and the velocity profile of the spray. It is found that the droplets with high relative velocity may collide each other due to the wide spectrum of the droplet velocity even under such dilute spray condition.
