An Integral Model for Piloted Ignition of Wet Wood


An integral model has been developed to simulate the piloted ignition of wet wood specimens in bench-scale piloted ignition tests. The model includes: (i) a conventional description of the piloted ignition problem in which all chemical processes are ignored and ignition is treated as the inert heating of the solid, and (ii) a simplified drying model. The drying model assumes that the drying process is controlled only by heat supply and it neglects bound-water diffusion, air/vapour diffusion, as well as pressure build-up inside the solid. Free-water movement is also not described. Due to these assumptions the model's validity range is limited to: (a) high temperature drying conditions, (b) initial moisture contents below 30% and (c) samples with similar longitudinal and transversal dimensions. The integral model formulated in this study has been validated against detailed numerical models and experimental data. The results of this study show that the integral model is reasonably accurate for engineering analysis.
