The most reliable stabilization of hard combustible
or noncombustible toxic and radioactive waste for their
further dispocal is obtained by means of high
temperature treatment accompanied by the production of
forms stable in chemical, thermal and radiation
aspects, i.e. glasses, ceramics. The use of low
temperature plasma is advantageous to get high stable
waste forms. To study this way of processing in the
thermal plasma a plasma shaft furnace was developed and
realized. A package of theoretical and experimental
studies has been carried out. It was shown that the
technique of waste processing in the plasma shaft
furnace is characterized by a sharp mode of temperature
distribution with plasma gas flow and in case of
radioactive waste - by a considerable reduction of
radionuclide entrainment with exhaust gases.
