This paper investigated the cooling and freezing processes of water around two horizontal tubes as basic research for an ice thermal storage system of the ice-on-coil type. The experiments were performed with varying cooling rates and distances between the two tubes. The processes were visualized and measured using mainly real-time laser holographic interferometry technique. As a result, the characteristic changes in flow patterns up to the release of supercooling could be found out.
