AN EXPERIMENTAL STUDY OF THREE INTERACTING VAPORIZING FUEL DROPLETS IN A FORCED CONVECTIVE LAMINAR FLOW

Abstract

An experimental facility and methodology is developed to capture the basic characteristics of interacting vaporizing droplets exposed to a laminar forced convection flow. Several transient phenomena are observed, even though the droplets are stationary with respect to the flow field. The vaporization patterns of the three droplets are completely different, but strong correlations exist between their respective dynamics. The three droplets show a quasi-stationary vaporization regime during approximately the first half of their lifetimes. During this period, the vaporization rate is highest for the lead droplet and weakest for the third droplet. For the later stages of the vaporization process, the instantaneous vaporization rates are totally non-stationnary for the three droplets. The changes in the instantaneous vaporization rates of the second and third droplet follow those of the front droplet closely. The heated flow experiments show basically the same trends with much shortened vaporization times for the three droplets. New features are however observed. One important result of heated flow experiments is to show a decreasing influence of droplet interaction on the vaporization patterns of the trailing droplets.
