PC BASED ROLL STRESS ANALYSIS
DOI: 10.1615/FAIM1997.910

Abstract
One of the limiting factors of rolling mill capacity is that of roll strength. Therefore, in the fast moving world of today, it is essential for null staff to have a good understanding of what the mill can achieve in terms of product range and capacity.
There is, therefore, a need for mill staff to have appropriate tools available so that well founded decisions can be made quickly when considering new schedules and products.
British Steel saw the opportunity to provide a computer-based tool for use by mill managers and engineers which would permit them to calculate the bending and torsional stresses in mill rolls under a variety of working conditions. Such a tool is designed to form one element of an overall PC software package aimed at optimising rolling schedules and providing a troubleshooting tool for the analysis of the occasional roll failure.
The development of such tools is at the heart of British Steels policy to transfer technology to the front line and forms and integral part of a continuous development policy.
