Abstract
We describe a prototypical solution of a process planning and control system for a work-cell based on the idea of dynamic adaptation and self-control which is already partly realized in practice. The key concept relies on what we call "agent-centered" design and control. Instead of allocating the planning intelligence to one authority we distribute planning tasks to agents in real time and provide information access when asked for. Each agent possesses a variety of problem solving strategies to cope with different situations. One particular focus in this project was the development of adequate man-machine interfaces to take advantage of the human potential in knowledge and experience as well. Finally we try to outline a methodology for the design of such process planning and control systems.
