Abstract

A comprehensive mathematical model for integrated simulation of plasma spraying is proposed. The model includes mathematical description of particle heating and acceleration in a plasma jet as well as the coating formation. It takes into account particle melting, evaporation and diameter reduction, and predicts coating structure, heat transfer in the "coating-substrate" system as well as the evolution of thermal stresses. An original software with materials database has been developed. It consists of 4 main blocks: applied models; pre-processor, including the database of material properties and a module of data preparation for simulation; processor which conducts the calculations and post-processor intended for processing the simulation results and their graphic visualisation. The software is intended to carry out simplified "start-to-finish" simulation of plasma spraying with the data transfer from one model to another, and independent calculation of separate models using the intermediate results stored in the database. The results presented in the paper concern the plasma spraying of stabilised zirconium oxide and aluminium oxide.
