Abstract

Preliminary theoretical and experimental results concerning a new spray technology for producing hard-coatings are reported. The method is based on powder particles acceleration and heating by a plasma - combustion gases mixture produced in an Electro-Thermal Chemical (ETC) process [1].
The technology appears promising for the deposition of several materials, such as cemented carbides, to obtain coatings on variety of substrates. In order to better understand and optimize the coating process a theoretical model describing the complex physics taking place within the device was developed. The experimental data concerning the gas pressure, particle velocity and other parameters are in good agreement with the model predictions.
