Abstract
The problem of heat exchanger fouling has been a feature of all industrial activity, particularly since the industrial revolution, yet in relative terms it has attracted little attention. In the light of the need to improve product quality, to reduce costs and at the same time take notice of public concern regarding energy use, pollution and global warming, there is an incentive for action. The installation of monitors to assess heat exchanger performance and provide on line data for immediate remedies for fouling, is likely to offer the best response. There is an opportunity also to provide extensive and reliable initial plant data of benefit to designers and operators alike.
