The Study of Electrode Processes during Tantalum Boride Electrochemical Synthesis in Oxofluoride Melts

Abstract

Electrode processes at the electrochemical synthesis of tantalum borides in FLINAK-K3Ta0F6-Na3B303F6 melts were studied by linear sweep voltammetry. The only cathodic peak was observed in wide range of B/Ta molar ratio at silver working electrode at 700-750°C. Square wave voltammetry, X-ray difraction, IR-spectroscopy, optical crystallography and chemical analysis were used as complementary methods for better understanding of the nature of the species discharging at the cathode. It was concluded that heteronuclear oxofluoro complexes of tantalum and boron participate in the process of electrochemical synthesis of tantalum boride in the melt under study.
