IMAGE ANALYSIS WITH SPATIAL FILTERING METHOD FOR THE VELOCITY OF DROPPING PARTICLES IN THE AIR

Abstract

This paper describes an application of a new measuring technique; the spatial filtering method(SFM) based on dynamic image processing and sequential image data obtained by a high speed video system for measuring the velocity of dropping particles in the air. For the case of lots of particle numbers and very fast velocity, for example on circulating fluidized bed(CFB), we noted it was very difficult to specify the particle velocity with SFM but confirmed it was very useful successfully. This time we try to apply for more simpler situation as a tentative example. Dropping velocity of single spherical particle in the air is probably well known because it is very easy to obtain such velocity by theoretical calculation or by the experiments with the optical method. Therefore, we tried to obtain it with SFM, then there was a very clear peak of frequency by spectrum analysis than before. As a result, we reconfirmed that SFM was possible and successful method basically for measuring the velocity of moving something like dropping particles in the air.
