Abstract

An automated data collection system using bar code technology was developed to aid automated inspection within an assembly cell. This system was designed to identify extra or missing components in a low volume, high variety mix of assembled products. Before leaving the assembly cell, a bar code on the assembled and packed product is scanned for its specific product identification number. The identification number serves as a key to a database lookup table of established weight tolerances for the product. The product is then weighed with an electronic scale and its weight is compared to pre-established tolerances. The operator is informed of the outcome of this comparison, and is prompted for specific feedback on failed outcomes. The system was piloted in a cell which assembles handle mechanisms for molded case circuit breakers. Results showed that the system reduced the defect rate from 1978 ppm to less than 67 ppm.
