THE EFFECT OF APERTURE SETTING ON PRESSURE ATOMIZER PHASE DOPPLER ANEMOMETRY MEASUREMENT

Sinopsis

Simultaneous phase Doppler anemometry measurements of droplet size and velocity are presented for eight pressure spray nozzles operating at a pressure of 6.3 bar. Radial profiles have been established at three distances (z = 20, 60 and 100 mm) downstream from each nozzle. Centreline measurements are also reported for the region 20-100 mm downstream from each nozzle. Advantage has been taken of an upgrade to the Dantec receiving optics which improves the precision and ease with which the user may set the photomultiplier apertures over which scattered light may be collected. Three aperture settings have been considered, these correspond to sizing ranges up to 156 μm (2 mm), 188 μm (1 mm) and 405 μm (0 mm), the figures in brackets reflect the aperture size. The measurements show the variations in mean droplet diameter (d10) and velocity with aperture setting. The significance in the choice of aperture setting, or sizing range, is evident from the droplet velocity/size correlations.
