Sinopsis

Conductivity probe measurements, varying nozzles, liquid properties and gas density, reveal more extensive information on the break-up of pulsed diesel sprays than has been published to date. The spray from a single hole orifice type nozzle has an incompletely atomized break-up length which extends at least one hundred diameters downstream. The structure of this break-up zone varies, depending on the liquid properties and initial and boundary conditions, from a central column, with outer drops and ligaments, to, a "wire wool" structure of ligaments and drops. Time variation of the break-up length occurs and concentrations of poorly atomized liquid move as coherent structures.
