This paper considers a body of requirements for integrated product-process modeling methodologies intended to enhance the early-stage design capabilities of Integrated Product and Process Development (IPPD) teams. In an IPPD environment, the mission systems engineer and the team leader are often one in the same person, making him/her responsible for ensuring that design decisions at all times properly reflect the customers' (both internal and external) fundamental requirements for acceptable levels of life cycle cost, performance, schedule, and risk. In order to do that effectively, the systems engineer must be able to rapidly develop appropriate mission analysis models to estimate the relative life-cycle consequences of design alternatives with respect to those top-level mission parameters. For complex products and processes, this can become exceedingly difficult. This paper explores related modeling requirements for government-sponsored scientific remote-sensing satellite missions. However, requirements in this environment are applicable to many design/manufacturing domains in both the public and private sectors.
