Résumé

Light scattering, in the forward direction, of a focused Gaussian laser beam by a homogeneous spherical particle is analyzed using the generalized Lorenz-Mie theory. Experimental data, corresponding to scattering from a levitated droplet located at three distinct positions along the axis of a focused laser beam, are presented and compared with theoretical predictions. It is found that both the peak intensity and scattering profile in the forward direction are very sensitive to the particle axial position within the beam. These results illustrate that significant departure from plane-wave scattering behavior can occur for a particle illuminated by a focused laser beam.
