Résumé

Airfield lighting is considered as one of the most magnificent invention of 20th century because it has made flying very easier and safer both by night and by day. Airfield lighting consists of quickly understandable illuminated signals, which visually guide the pilot during landing. A pilot making the visual landing depends on the visual clues on the ground. This is achieved by positioning the colour lights in a definite pattern, at the airfield. The field work mainly consists of measuring luminous flux (in lumen / Sq. Ft.) of Lahore International & Hyderabad feeder Airports of Pakistan. The data collected from Lahore Airport show that luminous flux of Approach, crossbar, Threshold, Touch down, Edge, PAPI, Runway Centerline, Taxiway and End lights are respectively, 40 - 50, 110-160, 5-6, 30-40, 20-30, 80-90, 20-30, 3-5 & 5-6 lumens / Sq.Ft. The experimental work is carried out on a taxiway light which was fixed on a stand in vertical position and was connected with Solar Energy Source (Photovoltic panel 40 watts capacity). The preliminary experiments show that Airfield lighting system can be litted by Solar Energy however, its economic feasibility and other preferences over power sources should be considered thoroughly before its practical implementation.
