Résumé

The cognitive model is by far the most rapid of rapid-prototypes. Engineers will significantly increase productivity, agility, and overall efficiency by developing the ability to build accurate cognitive models at the embryonic and developmental stages of any project. The recognition of spatial, graphical and design intelligences associated with a variety of visualisation skills, in the context and cerebral lateralisation is central to the successful development of modelling strategies. The research shows that individuals with a well developed spatial ability will significantly outperform those who have little or none. It will also show that cerebral lateralisation is evidenced in the significantly better performance of sinistrals in design and engineering activities. Strategies used to develop and enhance these abilities are discussed. These include drawing as a modelling system relative to problem-finding and problem-definition models.
