The phenomena of atomization, and to a lesser extent spray transport, are examined from the viewpoint of information in the physical system. Comparisons are made on the basis of the large variations in length scale between the important physical processes in spray flows and the vast amounts of data required to describe these flows using the primitive variables. The Maximum Entropy approach to description / prediction of drop size and velocity distributions is developed, showing that these distributions may be well approximated with only a few physical parameters, including a new mean diameter, D−10. Several suggestions are made regarding how similar ideas might be applied to make better use of information inherent in our current spray transport models.
