A COLLABORATIVE MANUFACTURING ENGINEERING EDUCATION PROGRAM IN OREGON

This paper discusses the establishment of a joint Master of Manufacturing program offered by Portland State University (PSU) and Oregon State University (OSU). Departments of Mechanical Engineering and Engineering Management at PSU, along with Mechanical Engineering and Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering at OSU, enrich the program with their unique strengths. A curriculum was developed by a task force comprised of industries representing a wide range of products.
The curriculum has been offered in the classical live lecture format as well as with several distance learning methodologies. These include two way audio-one way video format on satellite and by microwave, as well as delivered by VCR tapes supplemented by an on-site tutor and an on-call teacher located on campus. All types of formats appear to be well received by the students with diverse needs based upon their employment situations and routine.
Future outlook for the program appears promising and enrollment continues to increase. Experimentation continues in delivery mechanisms as well as timing, location, and course sequences.
