A Fluidized Bed Chemical Vapour Deposition (FBCVD) process was applied for the formation of aluminide coatings on iron, nickel and NiCr23Fe nickel alloy. This process is promising since it can lead to a flexible surface treatment combining adaptability with relatively low capital and operational costs. The method involves a treating agent consisting of a powder mixture of A1203 with FeAl which is fluidized at elevated temperature with Ar+10% H2. As an activator of the process NH4C1 is used. The results of optical microscopy, electron probe microanalysis (EPMA), X-ray diffraction, microhardness, surface roughness and hot corrosion tests indicate that with the FBCVD process the production of high quality nickel/iron aluminide coatings is feasible.
