Experimental investigations are made to study the convective phenomena of an initially stratified salt-water solution due to heating from below in a uniformly rotating cylindrical cavity. Flow of this case contains three dynamic ingredients: the enclosure rotation, the solutal stratification and the thermal buoyancy force due to heating from below.
Depending on the buoyancy ratio and rotating rate, initially three types of flow pattern appears; successively formed multi-layer flow regime, single-layer flow regime and stagnant flow regime. The number of layers forming at its initial stage decreases and the thickness of each layer decreases as the rotating rate increases for the same buoyancy ratio. The whole system eventually appears as a single mixed-layer where the temperature and concentration profile is uniform except a thin region at the top and bottom where rapid temperature variation occurs.
