The deposition of airborne fuel droplets into wall films is important in the inlet manifolds and ports of SI engines. Films then affect in-cylinder air/fuel ratios during transients which can exacerbate levels of noxious emissions. The deposition is increased by the levels of turbulence in the manifold. Turbulence is generated by many factors, such as the butterfly valves used for engine control or by turbochargers. With the latter, few studies exist which examine the immediate,
downstream flow. Further, the turbulence can be generated, modified and dissipated by the use of wire meshes. This study examines the effect of the above factors on the base air flow using experiments in a manifold simulation rig.
