In oil producing countries (i.e. Nigeria), with increased production of oil, the quantity of associated natural gas is increasing. Although, major portion of this gas is committed to various consumers like fertileser corporation, LPG stations, power stations etc., a substantial quantity of the gas is flared due to lack of ready market.
It is generally recognised that flaring wastes a valuable energy resource, causes healt problems (e.g. asthma, bronchitis, skin problems and breathing problems) and is environmentally damaging (e.g. acid rain, soot from smoky flames). Therefore, new alternatives to flaring to harness the enormous gas resource are essential.
The primary purpose of this study is to evaluate the existing plans, to search for new alternatives, such as production of petrochemicals and analyze the applicability and feasibility of these alternative options.
