Resumo

In order to benefit more fully from advances in Computer Aided Design programs (CAD) it is desirable that visualisation and graphic intelligence skills be developed prior to learning to use such programs. The ability to draw and sketch and to develop other related skills of graphicacy must if they are to be of any real value be underpinned by cognitive skills of graphic reasoning and spatial ability. Individuals with greater experience in drawing and sketching outperform those with little or none, in CAD activities. However, research has shown that appropriate tutorial intervention can redress the problem, as significant advances can be achieved in a relatively short period of time. Acquisition of such skills results in more efficiently exploiting the power of CAD and improved performances in most aspects of engineering and design.
