Chapter 13: Supervisory Control System for Energy-Efficient Buildings

The 97.8 quads of energy the United States consumed in 2010 represented 19% of global consumption—the second largest share of world energy consumption by any country. In the United States, buildings are one of the primary consumers of energy. Buildings were responsible for 41% of primary energy consumption in 2010, compared to 28% by the industrial sector and 31% by the transportation sector. Among all energy consumed by the buildings sector, residential buildings accounted for 54% and commercial buildings accounted for 46%. For both residential and commercial buildings, heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) accounted for the largest share, which represents close to half of all energy consumption.
