Аннотация
The size and multiplicity distribution of residues from collisions between pairs of 1g mercury drops have been measured as a function of impact parameter b and relative velocity Vr, in the 0.3m/s ≤ Vr ≤ 0.9m/s range. At high Vr values a transition between a narrow mass distribution for large b's, and a wide mass distribution for small b's, is observed. The multiplicity spectra show a broad distribution having a mean value of four, two large and two tiny drops. The results are discussed in terms of instabilities of the coalesced system associated to collective (rotational and vibrational) surface modes.
