Аннотация

In order to elucidate the measurement methods and conditions when the immersion liquid method is used in practical applications, as the liquid droplets are jetted out in an upward or horizontal direction, the authors investigated some troublesome problems occurring in connection with the use of this method. It was found from the results that captured droplets coalesce and evaporate even in the immersion liquid as well as on its surface. So, to prevent droplet coalescence and evaporation inside and on the immersion liquid, it is necessary to measure the droplet size as soon as possible after the droplets are captured or completely submerged. Moreover, it was also found that droplet area fraction AF is more sensitive to droplet coalescence and a more appropriate factor than local droplet number per unit area δL to estimate the accuracy of the droplet size and that when the shutter opening period for sample droplets is determined so as to be AF ≦ 5% , the error in the Sauter mean diameter D32 due to coalescence becomes negligibly small.
