The objective of this work was to reach basic data about metals volatility under the plasma column of an electrical arc transferred on a metallic oxide and chloride melt. To control industrial arc processes such as vitrification of fly ash from gas cleaning facilities or of bottom-ash from hazardous industrial waste incineration, incineration/vitrification of radioactive waste or recycling of heavy metals from metallurgical processes, it is highly required to know the parameters which govern the partitioning ratios between the melt and the gaseous phase.
A predictive model has been adapted to simulate the non-congruent vaporization of heavy metals from the melt. The effects, of the melt surface temperature, of the oxygen partial pressure in the gas phase, of the melt composition and of chloride content, on the metal volatilization have been evaluated for arsenic, chromium, lead, zinc and cadmium.
Finally the simulated lead depletion of the melt is compared with experimental data obtained through optical emission spectroscopy upon the melt.
