This book features the proceedings of the Fourth International Conference on Flexible Automation and Integrated Manufacturing (FAIM). This conference is an annual, international conference jointly organized by the University of Limerick and the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech). The first conference, "Factory Automation and Information Management-FAIM," was hosted in March 1991 by the University of Limerick, Ireland. Authors from more than eighteen countries contributed over 100 papers, and each paper was thoroughly refereed. The second conference, "Flexible Automation and Information Management," was hosted by Virginia Tech in Washington, D.C. on June 30, July 1-2, 1992. The third conference, "Flexible Automation and Integrated Manufacturing," was hosted a second time in June 1993 by the University of Limerick, Ireland. These conferences have been endorsed by numerous societies, associations, university affiliates, and international organizations. Based on the huge success of previous FAIM conferences, FAIM 94 is being hosted this year by Virginia Tech. Again the conference is sponsored by many international professional institutions, societies, and major organizations.
The last decade has been characterized by global competitiveness and rapidly advancing technology in flexible automation, information management and integrated manufacturing. FAIM 94 focuses on state-of-the-art and future trends within the general area of flexible automation and integrated manufacturing. The FAIM conference series differs from many other conferences in that it presents an integrated picture of these related technologies, rather than focusing on one single technology.
This year, authors from twenty-five countries have contributed more than 100 papers, and as in the case of previous FAIM conferences, each paper has been thoroughly refereed by at least two reviewers The papers are divided into five sections which span die three-day conference:
1. Computer Integrated Manufacturing and Systems Design
2. CAD/CAM and Concurrent Engineering
3. Quality/Quality Management
4. Manufacturing Automation
5. Processes and Systems
FAIM aims at providing high quality, refereed papers for upper and middle managers, industrial and manufacturing engineers, and practitioners/researchers in the field of computer assisted design and manufacturing.
