Sinopsis
This paper introduces a new simulation methodology for modeling Flexible Manufacturing Systems (FMS). Unlike previous simulation methods which attempt to model the flow of entities through a stochastic queueing network (SQN), this methodology focuses on modeling the interactions between the controllers that coordinate the production within the FMS. The paper first introduces the basic concepts associated with this modeling methodology and then discusses the application of this approach to the modeling of the Rapid Acquisition of Manufactured Parts (RAMP) FMS developed by the South Carolina Research Authority for the Naval Supply Systems Command.
