Resumo
The objective of this paper is to describe a methodology for estimating the size and shape of the air core, and the velocity field, within pressure swirl atomizers using a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) code, FLUENT. The calculated air core topology together with the axial and tangential velocity components of the flow within the atomizer and the discharge coefficient are all compared with their experimentally determined counterparts with reasonable agreement. The investigation shows complexities of the internal flow pattern that have not been described in previous work. The modelling approach provides a new method for designing atomizers.
