Аннотация
This paper analyses the information systems needs of make-to-order companies and considers some current approaches addressing these needs. The main distinguishing characteristics of companies in this marketplace are identified. An integrated view for systems application is adopted, viewing the full spectrum of activities from enquiry, through quotation, order receipt, supplier purchase orders, materials control, planning, works scheduling, production monitoring, time and attendance, to goods dispatch. The contrasts with traditional MRP systems are discussed, showing how these approaches have not properly addressed the requirements. An illustration is given of an operational system specifically designed for this marketplace, and a case study of a company utilising an integrated system for its manufacturing operations is described.
